Who/What: St Jude’s Dream Home Give-away
Mood: Sophisticated Children’s Spaces
About: The St. Jude’s Dream Home Give-Away is exactly what it sounds like. This is a collaborative effort by local interior designers and the builder (StyleCraft) to totally donate an entire dream home with all its belongings inside to a lucky winner. All of the money raised for this event is donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. This is an invitation only designer charity house that showcases 3 local designers, dividing up the spaces by floor levels. Various companies sponsor the event through funds, item donations or time sponsorship.
In this house, I was given the third floor, which contains the children’s loft area, and two children’s room. Being that this house was intended and built to support the children at St. Jude’s, I thought it was only fitting to get inspiration from one of the Children’s Artwork. I came across James S’ art piece. I was really drawn in by his use of fun colors and his piece really looked abstract. I thought how cool would it be to blow this up and make it into a super dynamic piece that takes up most of the wall. His art piece really set the color tone for this space. I used his art to bounce pops of color into the space. As far as furniture selections go, I picked pieces that I thought would be children friendly. A Charcoal sofa is great for hiding dirt stains. Striated Fabrics in general are great fabrics to hide any imperfections that can arise over time. I specifically loved how big this sofa is- great for plopping and an awesome backup for sleepovers! The coffee table is actually a set of two smaller coffee tables, which makes it easy to move around and make space. I really liked that they were a rustic wood, again great for wear over time. Of course I had to add a white chair in there to help balance out the darker pieces. This is however kid proof as it’s a krypton performance fabric chair! I always love doing a demo on this with red wine- It freaks people out. In the best way of course!
The girls room- here I really went for a little princess vibe. Something I hear from parents to young children is they really struggle to get their kids to sleep in their own room. Over time, something I learned about kids is always go for the big bed. They like to roll over and feel comfy. Plus you won’t have to have such high anxiety about them falling off the bed. They’ll love their room and you for it. I personally love a painted ceiling especially when there’s not adequate lighting. A white ceiling makes your eyes stop and can actually make a room feel smaller. I love making a room feel expansive and this pale pink did just that in addition to adding the perfect touch of serenity.
For the boys room - I pictured a little 7 year old that likes to explore and perhaps even dig up worms- why? Just because. 7-9 are interesting ages to design for. They’re still little but they’re not that far off from being teenagers. This age bracket I always say go older versus younger. Otherwise you’ll find yourself spending a lot of money again very soon. Because I was designing with this specific age in mind, I wanted something they could grow into but also enjoy now! There’s this explorer sprinklings of fun with staple pieces that will work for years to come!
